Menswear

2024

The project originated from my observations of everday life, such as the street culture of men's dress on the streets, bespoke tailoring, and stereotypical clothing. In the research of the project, I started from my cultural background and investigated Chinese street photography from the 1990s to modern day street photography on my own mobile phone. The Beijing Bikini that appears in the project is a typical street culture outfit, exploring stereotypical 'masculinity'. In the design of the project, I wanted to express a blend of elegance and roughness. A certain element of roughness allows for a kind of freedom in dressing ; one which should not insist on changing or be blindly criticised. Maintaining an elegant balance and the originality of the street is a key component of this project.

Publication

Edition 1

This portfolio mainly showcases a publication I recently designed. As the art director and photographer of the publication, the content of not only shows fashion design and styling, but also challenges the viewer to considering more perspective of images. With sufficient imagination to read the fashion system: think, be patient and constantly deconstruct all the visual symbols.

03.EYES

2023

This fashion design project is about optical illusions. The inspiration for the design project comes from the eyes of animals. When humans and animals observe the same object, the visual information received by human eyes and those of animals is different. We are accustomed to using just our own standards as the measurement criteria without consideration for alternative perspectives . This led me to consider, is the world really as we see it? Perhaps what a puppy sees is actually the real world?

In my understanding, visual illusions can occur due to trusting one's own eyes. Human beings will maintain a firm attitude towards what they see with their own eyes, even though sometimes this information is deceiving us. For my research, I studied how humans utilize optical illusions and how they alter the information received by the eyes through carriers, such as 3d red and blue glasses. In the project, the audience, designers and wearers all have the right to choose how to view my clothing. Ykk zippers build a bridge between me and the wearers. By ingeniously combining Ykk zippers with the silhouette, the shape of the clothing can be changed by the wearers; for example trousers can be transformed into skirts. The audience will experience a different visual effect depending on which view of the clothing they have, whether this be viewing form the front, back, left and right. Inspired by 3d red and blue glasses, when the audience wears red or blue glasses, the silhouette of the clothing will change visually. The clothing adopts a modular design, and the zippers of Ykk can help the clothing have the opportunity to be extended in future use as planned.

05.BOOKs

Publication

This prototype is enhanced by the imagination capabilities of the images. My connection with pictures is not only with the book’s content , but also about how the book is bound and how pictures are associated together. This prototype uses comb binding and can be opened in different directions. After the book is opened, Different pictures can be flipped through in different directions, but also read as a normal book for a range of experiences and interactions with the pictures.

The materials of the pictures come from my own shooting and painting works, as well as different artists such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Daito Moriyama and Liutao.

This is a short-term project. Within a week, I completed the shooting and publication. Inspired by this publication, I developed a prototype. I disassembled two chairs and combined them to create a bag

05.The Drape of Architecture

2024

This collection draws inspiration from repetitive architectural forms and the expressive quality of draped textiles: a soft, unstructured kind of romance. One day, as I observed the hanging curtains, it reminded me of the stripes on Roman columns, helping to develop a fantasy— one where the fluidity of fabric met the rigid lines of classical architecture. Integrating my understanding of bias cutting with traditional menswear design and culture, I explored the tension between softness and structure, continually reimagining how romance can be expressed in menswear
